Nomination deadlines are quickly approaching at the beginning of July for a trio of prestigious awards that will be presented at SC16. Each year, SC showcases the best and brightest stars of high performance computing – and awards provide just one way for these individuals to be recognized. ACM/IEEE-CS Kenneth Kennedy Award
Established in memory of Ken Kennedy, the founder of Rice University’s nationally ranked computer science program and a leading expert on high performance computing. The ACM and the IEEE Computer Society jointly award a certificate and $5,000 honorarium for outstanding contributions to programmability or productivity in high performance computing together with significant community service or mentoring contributions. Last year, Katherine Yelick won the Kennedy Award for advancing the programmability of HPC systems, strategic national leadership, and mentorship in academia and government labs.
IEEE-CS Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award
Established in late 1997, the Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award recognizes innovative contributions to HPC systems that best exemplify the creative spirit of Seymour Cray. Nominations that recognize the design and engineering and intellectual leadership in creating innovative and successful HPC systems are especially solicited. The award includes a crystal memento, illuminated certificate and $10,000 honorarium. Learn more about Seymour Cray.

Last year, Mateo Valero won the award for his seminal contributions to vector, out-of-order, multithreaded and VLIW architectures.
IEEE-CS Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award
The Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award honors innovative uses of HPC in problem solving. Nominations that recognize creation of widely used and innovative software packages, application software, and tools are especially solicited. The award was established in 1992 in memory of Sidney Fernbach, one of the pioneers in the development and application of high performance computers for the solution of large computational problems. Last year, Alexander Szalay won the Fernback award for his outstanding contributions to the development of data-intensive computing systems and on the application of such systems in many scientific areas including astrophysics, turbulence and genomics.
