Preparing for SC16
SC16 will be a rich and exciting experience for both new and old attendees. To start planning your agenda, begin at the SC16 website. Here you will find descriptions of the activities and a detailed Technical Program Schedule that can be used to build your own personalized agenda.
When viewing the online Technical Program Schedule, once you select an event and want to add it to your personal schedule, just click on one of the calendar icons and that event will be stored there.
New App-like Online Program for SC16
Instead of having attendees download another conference app, the SC16 organizers decided to create a fully responsive online program. This mobile and tablet-friendly program offers many of the features that have been provided to our attendees at past conferences, but without the hassle of having to download yet another app.
Some of the features include filters for specific event types and tags, day-specific links, a presenter index, organization index, detailed search capability, a “Happening Now” area for current and near-future sessions, the ability to add sessions to your personal calendar and the ability to flag sessions. Flagging will allow you to add sessions to the flagged page, and from there add your entire flagged agenda into your calendar, all without having to setup a login and password.
Check out the new online program, which is easily accessible from the conference website.
Safety Notes
We value the safety of all SC attendees and want you to focus on enjoying your stay and experience at the conference. To assist you, here are a few common conference reminders and safety pointers to help make sure you have a safe and productive trip.
- Please make sure to use the buddy system, multiple persons are better–don’t ever walk alone at night.
- Make sure you have a phone on you in case of emergencies and you have at least one other attendee’s contact information.
- Please DO NOT WEAR YOUR CONFERENCE BADGE outside of the convention center. This is often a targeting mechanism for scammers and criminals.
- Ask your hotel staff if certain areas are safe/not safe before going out.
- Don’t leave your belongings unattended.
- If you are driving, take a second to double check that your car doors are locked.
- Stay on well-lit or major streets at night.

How SC is Organized
There are four main components of the SC Conference: Technical Program, Exhibits, Students@SC, and SCinet:
Technical Program: the heart of the conference, the technical program provides multiple forums for sharing research, development, and applications in high performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis:
- HPC Matters Plenary
- Invited Talks
- Panels
- Technical Papers
- Tutorials
- Workshops
- Posters
- Birds of a Feather
- Awards
- Emerging Technologies
- Scientific Visualization Showcase
Technical Program registration and badge are needed for attending most of these sessions, while tutorials and workshops require separate registrations.
Exhibits: Our exhibit halls are filled with booths featuring the latest technologies and discoveries from industrial and research organizations located around the world. To enter the Exhibition Floor, you will need an Exhibitor, Technical Program, or Exhibits Only registration.
Students@SC: The SC16 conference is broadening its mission to build a strong and diverse HPC student community at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, through professional development programs, opportunities to learn from mentors, and engagement with SC’s technical sessions:
- Student Cluster Competition
- Student Volunteers
- ACM Student Poster Competition
- Doctoral Showcase
- Dinner with Interesting People
- Mentor-Protégé Program
- Student-Postdoc Job Fair
SCinet operates a commodity network for attendees and an experimental network that showcases the latest, most sophisticated technology currently available, has more bandwidth into the Conference than any other facility in the world, and more capacity than many cities and countries. SCinet supports the high-speed network connections linking the Convention Center to outside networks and provides wired and wireless connections for SC attendees and exhibitors.
Social Events
There are four major social events scheduled by the SC16 Conference, however vendors are also known to hold additional events.
The Exhibitor Reception, Sunday November 13, from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. MT, will be held for registered exhibitors at SKY SLC, a brief walk from the Convention Center. This year’s reception will have an eclectic mix of activities, from cocktails and live music by the Groove Merchants, to local beer sampling and food pairings, to darts and ping-pong. The reception will offer a little something for everyone and lots of fun for all! An Exhibitor badge, party ticket, and government-issued photo ID are required, and you must be 21 or over to attend this event. Shuttle transportation from the Convention Center back to hotel along the normal bus routes will be available from 6:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m.
The Opening Gala, Monday, November 14, from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. MT will be held on the Exhibition Floor. This will be your first opportunity to see the latest high performance computing, networking, storage, analysis, and research products, services, and innovations. This event is open to all Technical Program, Exhibitors and Students@SC registrants.
The Poster Exhibit Reception, Tuesday, November 15, from 5:15 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. MT, will be held in Lower Lobby Concourse, South Lobby, Exhibit Hall E – Booth 104 with complimentary refreshments and appetizers. With the opening of the posters, this will be a key time to interact with poster authors and socialize other topics.
The Technical Program Reception, Thursday, November 17, from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. MT, is a conference reception for all Technical Program attendees and will be held at The Leonardo, an interactive museum now featuring a flight exhibit and additional displays geared to stimulate the mind. Attendees are encouraged to explore all three floors of the Museum, as we know you will be pleased with the extensive food, exhibit, and entertainment offerings found throughout the space. A Tech Program badge, event ticket, and government-issued photo ID are required to attend this event. Shuttle transportation to and from the event will run starting at 5:45 pm from the Convention Center
SC16 Conference-at-a-Glance & Exhibitor List and Floorplan

The Exhibit List and Floorplan provides a list of all exhibitors, and floorplan of the showfloor. Information is also available on the SC16 program schedule page.

Wireless Access
All of SC’s networking resources – including nearly a terabit of wired bandwidth – are provided free of charge through SCinet. The wireless network will extend to meeting rooms, exhibit halls, and all common areas of the center occupied by SC16. The network can be accessed via SSIDs “SC16” or “eduroam.” The “SC16” SSID is the general, unencrypted wireless access SSID that the majority of attendees and exhibitors will use to connect to the Internet.
The “eduroam” SSID is an encrypted wireless connection that is authenticated with a pre-configured users’ credentials from their participating home institution. SC16’s SCinet team has deployed the eduroam service (education roaming) to allow eduroam-enabled users to connect to the wireless network. Eduroam is a secure, worldwide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Every institution (i.e., university or equivalent) that participates in eduroam connects its institution’s identity authentication and authorization server (called RADIUS) to a national, top-level RADIUS server of the country where the institution is located to validate the user’s identity credentials.
If you do not have an account previously setup before coming to SC16 by your institution (or your institution does NOT participate in eduroam), you will NOT be able to join the eduroam server at the SC conference. For more information, visit: https://www.eduroam.org/
