James D. Stevens

Biography
James Stevens is a PhD student in the scientific computing group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently researching performance prediction and runtime performance tuning for computational subprograms on GPUs and CPUs. James earned a BS in computer science at Washington University in St. Louis in 2010, and graduated with an MS in Computer Science in 2011. His university studies focused on mobile robot path planning and obstacle avoidance. James was selected for the Department of Defense S.M.A.R.T. recruitment program and, before starting his PhD, completed a three-year service commitment at Tinker Air Force Base. There he joined a high performance computing group and helped integrate simulated weather data into a flight simulator used for pilot evaluation. This work differed from his Master’s focus, and he discovered new interests that lead to his return to academia in 2014 to begin his PhD.
